That’s crazy. I’ve not heard of the arbitrary text issue. I use the Digg Digg floating bar here and I don’t seem to have that issue.

Being a graphic designer, I am quite partial to wp-typography. It creates real quotes and apostrophes, helps with letter spacing/tracking and hyphenation, and just makes the web a prettier place.

A client of mine, who has a golf shop, was doing quite a bit of business on e-bay. He added cigars to his catalogue, because cigars and golf go well together. It wasn't a primary part of his business, just something to toss in with an order.

Someone bought ONE cigar from him, and Paypal notified him that his account was now closed, because they prohibited tobacco products. He told them he was unaware of that policy, and removed the cigars from his site. Too bad. They refused to give him his account back. His e-bay business became a bust – without paypay you might as well tell your customers you will only accept payments in krugerrands. It took him a year and a half to get his account back. He lost tens of thousands of dollars in business as a result.

I recently tried to buy some e-cigarette supplies on line, and found that paypal wouldn't allow me to use MY money to buy them with their "service." A month before I placed a large cigar order on line from a well known cigar site and they had a link to paypal. The sale went though with no trouble.

A couple of years ago I made a $35 purchase at DragonCon using my PayPal credit card. A few minutes later I received a notice of fraudulent activity on my account. I called them, and explained that it was a valid purchase. That wasn't enough for them. I had to immediately log on and jump through all kinds of hoops to get my account back. It took me over an hour. Here I was, at a convention, looking to have a blast at the zillions of things offered, and I had to sit in my hotel room and wrestle with their nonsense. I never used that card again.

I still have my account with them, because it's an easy way for people to give me money, but whenever the balance goes over $50 I make it a point to spend it immediately, or transfer it to a different account. They are too untrustworthy to keep any substantial sums in there.

Is there an update on when this plugin will support pages? It would be fantastic to have full support for that part of Wordpress.

Great Article. Why can't I find any other informatino about this? i've learned this is too true. To think I almost dumped another $50k on a Masters degree so I could get promoted into management, to make another 20k a year, to go into a higher tax bracket, to do more overtime and stress out about my new responsibilities..
I've finally learned that I dont need a Higher salary. I just need more money. If instead I spent researched, planned, and prepared $50k for a possibile opportunity outside of "a Job", I'd rather lose it all knowing I had tried. At least then I would have learned something valuable..

and now what you do as part of the "thank you" online economy floats your brand to the top of search.
Great stuff, Cory. I like that they're simple, practical ideas I can use instead of a bunch of theory about how things "should" work. Whether someone's promoting on youtube or anywhere else, it's really a matter of being authentic, consistent and having passion for what they're doing. Clearly you fit that.

Hi Taylor

Thats great you are thinking of being able to add it to the top of the page. Would also be good if you were able to place it within the page text and have the text flow around the box. Also, align the box right or left as I think they can do in the maxbanner ad plugin.

Understand and agree with your answer regarding my question #2. However my wish would be to use the call to box in a similar manner to the way its used on michelfortin's blog. The reason for this is I am going to start a new site which will be targeted at my home town. I want to be able to place some call to action boxes as adverts between the blog posts as in michelfortin site. I would like to be able to select which posts are aligned with a call to action advert.

For this particular site a lot of people will be coming direct to the index page first.

Hope you can consider this if its not to complex.

Regards

John

In a future release I plan on adding it to the top of the page as well. I can see your point for #2, however, think of it this way. Most of the people who visit your site via social media/search engines typically land on a particular blog post. What do they do after they have finished reading that post? Leave a comment? Subscribe? Learn more about you? I designed that box to appear at the end of the blog post specifically to attract the readers eye and give them a "call to action/something to do" after they finished reading.

Let me know if that helps you. :)

Hi Taylor

Thinking about purchasing your plugin, a few questions please.

1/ Can you place the call to action at the top of the post. If not, will you be updating it, to be able to do that.

2/ Would it be possible for you to update your plugin so that it can place a call to action between selected posts. You can see an example of this on the michelfortin.com blog.

I think being able to place a call to action between posts would make your plugin a killer product, and would make you many more sales.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Regards

I hate that I agree with Jordan. Even worse that he's from Lou'vull (and probably lives out in Anchorage or some such place).

But he's right, Taylor. In the end, it does come down to content. I'm going to use blogging as an example, because we're commenting on a blog, and I'm familiar with you from blogging, etc.

But blogging is really an aspect of electronic publishing. Perhaps not the most interesting aspect. Certainly a widely known though.

Let's back up and take Gary Vee for example. Gary founded his business on 2 things:
1. Commitment to accurate, detailed wine reporting, and
2. leverage from an existing business.

In other words, he went very deep into wine, and he could afford to do that because his mortgage was paid for from the existing business.

How do we learn from that?

Two ways.

First, whatever is currently paying the rent, should continue to pay the rent in the interim.

Second, niche down into something you personally find interesting, which has marketable value. By niche down, I mean explore the dark, dusty nooks and crannies of a topic area. Hyperfocus. Be able to write thousands and thousands of words on it.

Then present this information to your market in a way they can use it - benefit from it - immediately. Strangely, most won't. But they feel they could, and that produces the same emotional response (now you the secret of the really successful marketers).

10% will execute and sing your praise.

Seriously, this is what's working for me right now. Stop by my site and check out Nov 6 2010 article on mentoring. You may find something useful there.

I found an email of a VP level executive and email them directly. Within 24 hours, I got a call from the head of customer services and got my funds returned and account reinstated.

Do a google search for "Cryptome and my experiences with Paypal"

The email address I had sent to is jmuller@paypal.com

My email
Dear Mr Muller,

I am very disappointed on how Paypal is treating it's customers. I have read many horrors stories based on my research on funds being held. I too have recently experienced two instances where my funds are frozen. Right now, I am considering cancelling my account similar to a few vocal fans of Cryptome.
I hope Paypal will enhance it's seller protection in the near future. The current policy protects the buyer at the expense of the seller.

If you can please help with obtaining why my fund was frozen, I would greatly appreciated. I don't really care about the xxx dollars that is held, but I am more concerned about the lack of reason that was given.
I spoke with a supervisor on the phone today, and he wasn't able to explain to me why my account balances are frozen.

Exactly. Don't trust them for any reason. Still hurts to be out of your money though. Have you had any luck getting your money back?

Thanks Mark! Several other people suggested that feature, which I just released in the 1.0.2 version that you can download from the Wordpress Plugin Directory. The pages feature will be coming soon, so stay tuned. :)

Taylor, Nice plugin! Fits a need very well. I'd love to see the font changed to Arial, Verdana or something a little easier on the eyes. Also, the ability to get this to work with pages instead of just posts would be awesome! Please consider it.

By the way, I have a giveaway contest currently running on my blog. Do you want the Wordpress Plugin or will it not work for your sites? Let me know. :)

Ok, awesome. At this point you can create a different call to action message for each post, perhaps I'll integrate your idea in a future release. Font and color for the message will remain how it is, but you can easily change the background color. Let me know. :)

Thanks for mentioning us, Taylor! I am glad you found Social Media Informer to be useful and interesting. Your sentiment regarding the smaller bloggers actually reflects a significant factor in why we're doing this - we want to not only provide the best content in the space by aggregating posts from famous bloggers, but also to provide an opportunity for smaller bloggers to get more exposure and reader engagement by surfacing their content next to those of the "big guys".

Cheers,
Paul

Yes I got it. Looks pretty good. I wish I can set up different call to action message for different categories. In addition, I hope I can control the font and color of the message as well as the background color, but maybe it's overkill for call to action.

I just stumbled on this after having a convo with the business owner down the hall about the value of relationships, serving others and saying thank you in business. Thanks for the interesting, thought provoking post.Jordan, you seem to be an extremely motivated young professional. Go get 'em, man. Our economy needs more Jordan's. Cheers!

And, without a doubt, I am eager to read what GaryVee has to offer next.

I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't been involved in this whole situation. The problem is that Paypal doens't have to obey any banking regulations. There really are no laws to govern what they do. So Paypal does whatever they want to do. In the meantime they are freezing accounts and literally taking other people's money right from under their noses. And you wondered how they made any money . . .

BTW, I looked at your site. I like it, but I think you need to kick it up into a Wordpress website at the very least now. ;)

Awesome, thanks Gary. I'm in Taiwan though (teaching English for a year through the government and HTC), so we can chat either via Skype or try another method.

Otherwise, if you want to make a video answering my question or need some clarification from me, please let me know. Hopefully I'm not taking some content you plan on putting in the book, I just want it clarified so we are both on the same page. :)

Thanks for the comment, I enjoyed reading it. I think I read it more than twice... :P

The only reason I dropped 'guru' into the post is for its original meaning. The idea behind the word was the "gurus of old" were mostly dirt poor and fought in every sense of the word to be heard. If you want me to drop it, I will do so. :)

I understand completely. Not trying to rub it the wrong way, just trying to shake up the status quo. ;)

I'll make it a point to do that. Position-wise my blog tagline is "My journey into the vibrant world of new media." I chose that based upon the idea of being able to share my insights and experiences along the way.

Nope, I don't want to be a rock star at all, not that I haven't been tempted once or twice... Rockstars have a short-lived bubble, I'm looking for something that lasts a lifetime and even beyond that!

I'll remember that. Thanks for your opinion. ;)

Okay, so...

Firstly, just a heads-up the term guru is now widely associated with being a douche... so I'd consider dropping that from your spiel completely. Secondly, have you stopped to consider that maybe your angle of approach needs some refining?

I wonder how many people took the time to read this and bounced after reading the first paragraph because, frankly, they are completely over self-professed internet marketing artist/gurus and seek authenticity, transparency, genuine substance (interpret 'real connection') and innovative tools to improve their lives?

I am not suggesting YOU are a douche or that what you tweet, share, write about, lacks substance. In fact, your spirit for change and to make a difference is amicable Taylor - which is ultimately why I've taken the time to comment (not because I think that you're a 'guru' ;)

I want to encourage you to be more introspective about what you write and to drop unnecessary cliches. LISTEN more. And consider positioning yourself as 'a traveler on the journey to success' i.e. someone sharing genuine insights and experience from their journey - as opposed to someone who has the answers. THIS will make a difference to someone else, like me, who might just be listening ;)

If your intent is to be a rock star then sadly, you have a gazillion other self-professed rock stars in front of you. But my take is that your desire is to be genuinely helpful and to build an online business of value and substance. Consider reaching out to people unconditionally with something of value, i.e. simple, tangible thoughts or tips which you've applied first in your own life rather than complaining bot what people aren't doing? Just a thought...

If you do this consistently and respectfully it is very likely people of serious influence will start to listen and engage back, thus legitimizing what you offer as credible and at a more personal level - endorsing you as someone who they can rely on (aka 'trusted source').

Of course... this is just my humble opinion ;)

Hey Ron,

Thanks for that comment. I can see exactly where you're coming from, I'm in the same exact boat. ;)

What you're doing is awesome and I wouldn't want you to trade anything else for it. I agree that time is worth more than cash, really any option would work even if it's a simple "Thank You".

Keep up the awesome work on your end, you have a big 'Thank You' from me by stepping out and sharing your thoughts. :)

WELLLLL, Taylor, I DO care BUT cannot (at the moment) afford to support, buy or even just help out sometimes as i'm totally broke trying to make a living from those so called GURU's,spending my disability pension on sooo many back end products hoping upon hope that THIS IS THE ONE,and I still have not made a red cent, penny, dime,$,£, yen, lira or a euro, BUT I do give my time to volunteer in a charity shop AND am with my wife, son and stepdaughter (they are doing the cycling) taking them up to scotland and they are cycling the 200miles over 3 day's back home (I will be their support vehicle driver) ALL in aid of GB's HELP FOR HEROES and the ARMY DEPENDENCE UNIT.
I'm sure there are MANY many people world wide who do the same sort of thing, they would help out financially but are unable to SO they give their TIME which if you think about (not too hard though) CANNOT be got back like cash. I would dearly love to be able to give cash as well as time, so any info on internet marketing (cheap/free),would be much appreciated. regards Ron Roberts alias pluginprofitfan on twitter.

To put it bluntly (as I always try to do), the "Thank You Economy" isn't broken at all. It's just that you need to produce something worth being thanked for in order for it to pay off. You don't get points for just showing up.

A comedian can't do the same lousy jokes for years and expect to get anywhere. Even if they chum up with some cool people, promote them & make connections, their comedy act is still crap. It's only the comedians who write *good* jokes and *kill* in front of audiences that benefit from the "Thank You Economy".

Although Gary V will downplay the cliche "content is king", the crux of his success came from the fact Wine Library TV and his personal videos/talks were actually *awesome* content. Content worth being thanked for. Adding all the social media channels, interactions, communication & connections on *top* of that winning formula just skyrocketed him even further - but it could never single handedly replace the need to create something worth talking about.
